Biography
Elisha Otis trained as a mechanic and carriage-maker, and in 1853 he unveiled his safety elevator brake at the Crystal Palace in New York, proving that elevators could be trusted and paving the way for buildings to rise skyward.
He founded what would become the Otis Elevator Company, instilling safety as the cornerstone of vertical transportation and inspiring generations of engineers.
