Elisha Y. Ten Eyck

Biography

Elisha Y. Ten Eyck was born in 1835 into an Albany family rooted in civic life, and he carried on that tradition with a conscientious care that suited an age of rapid growth. He took pride in the steady work of local commerce and the friendships that flourished along the Hudson’s banks.

During a long life spent in the city he was admired for his fairness in business dealings and for the patience with which he mentored younger men entering public service. Even without great titles, he was seen as a patient presence who helped steady Albany’s transitions in the decades before his passing.
