Biography

Emanuel Celler, born in 1888, represented Brooklyn in the U.S. House of Representatives for five decades, guiding the Judiciary Committee through momentous legislation on civil rights, immigration, and fair housing. His calm intellect and insistence on due process helped shape the nation’s commitment to equality and open opportunity.

After retirement he remained a mentor to young lawyers and civic advocates, and he rests at Mount Neboh Cemetery, leaving behind a legacy of principled public service.
