Biography

Emily Horsburgh was born in 1800, during the height of the Napoleonic Wars, into a period of considerable social and political change. Her life spanned the early decades of the nineteenth century, a time of cultural development and imperial expansion for Britain. She came of age during the Regency period, an era known for its distinctive social customs and cultural achievements.

Horsburgh passed away in 1825 at the age of 25, her life tragically shortened in what should have been her most productive years. Her burial at South Park Street Cemetery in Calcutta indicates her family's residence in British India. Her grave remains a poignant reminder of the many young lives lost during this period, whether through illness or the hardships of life in the subcontinent.
