Biography
Emperor Kōmei was the 121st Emperor of Japan, reigning during one of the most turbulent and transformative periods in Japanese history. His reign witnessed the final decline of the Edo shogunate, the arrival of foreign powers, and the mounting pressures that would ultimately lead to the Meiji Restoration. As the symbolic and political center of the nation, Kōmei navigated the complex challenges of preserving imperial authority while Japan faced unprecedented external and internal pressures.
Emperor Kōmei's death in 1867 marked a pivotal moment in Japanese history, occurring just one year before the Meiji Restoration that would fundamentally reshape the nation. He was honored with burial at Tsuki no wa no misasagi, a sacred imperial mausoleum befitting his exalted station.
