Biography

Emperor Ninkō (1800–1846) reigned during a significant period of Japanese history, presiding over the imperial court during the late Edo period. His reign witnessed considerable political and social developments as Japan navigated internal challenges and growing foreign interest in the isolated nation.

As sovereign, Emperor Ninkō maintained the ceremonial and spiritual functions of the imperial institution during a time of considerable change. His interment at Tsuki no wa no misasagi reflects the sacred status accorded to Japanese emperors and the reverence for the imperial lineage that has endured throughout Japanese history.
