Estevan Antonio Fuertes
1838–1903 (age 65)
Biography
Estevan Antonio Fuertes brought his training in engineering and astronomy from Puerto Rico to the Cornell campus, where his meticulous surveys and study of hydrography laid foundations for modern civil engineering education. A professor and bridge-builder, he helped students grasp the connection between theory and the physical world.
He cherished the view of the stars as much as the flow of waterways, and his peers honored him as a devoted teacher whose presence enriched Lake View Cemetery with the memory of someone who elevated science with humility and grace.
