Francis Fowke

1823–1865 (age 42)

Biography

Francis Fowke (1823-1865) combined rigorous training with the Royal Engineers and an artist's sensibility to design and oversee public buildings for Victorian London, from sketches for the Royal Albert Hall to bold plans for the museums in South Kensington.

Though he died young, the institutions he helped shape—the South Kensington museums and civic halls—rose from plans he left behind, and his remains rest at Brompton Cemetery in the city he did so much to embellish.
