Frank Damrosch came from a revered family of musicians and became a leading conductor and teacher in New York, championing symphonic music and bringing high standards to the Oratorio Society of New York and other ensembles. He nurtured public appreciation for the great composers while also encouraging the performance of American works.
As an advocate for music education, Damrosch helped establish the Institute of Musical Art, a precursor of today's Juilliard School, and he inspired generations of performers before he was laid to rest in Woodlawn Cemetery.
