Biography
Frank Dekum, born in 1829 in Germany, emigrated to the United States and made his home in Portland, where he opened dry goods stores, served as a banker, and helped finance the construction of landmarks such as the Italianate Dekum Building that still stands downtown.
His business acumen was matched by civic generosity, as he supported relief efforts, hospitals, and churches, believing that a prosperous city should also be a compassionate one.
