Biography

James C. Hawthorne devoted his medical career to caring for Oregon’s most vulnerable, founding the Oregon Hospital for the Insane and insisting on compassionate treatment for people with mental illness.

For decades he oversaw the institution, earning admiration for his steady kindness and concern for patients and staff alike, and is remembered at Lone Fir Cemetery.
