Biography

František Čelakovský (1799–1852) was a poet and essayist whose vivid portrayals of Czech folklore and historical subjects resonated deeply with readers of his time, helping to anchor a sense of national identity. He devoted himself to editing and translating literary treasures, ensuring that the richness of Slavic traditions remained accessible to a new generation of readers.

Throughout his life he championed a cultured, moral life and his gentle yet resolute voice guided fellow patriots during the revival of Czech literature; he was laid to rest in Olšany Cemetery among those he inspired.
