Biography

Frederick Augustus Genth was born in Germany and immigrated to the United States, where his training in analytical chemistry led him to a prominent place in Philadelphia's scientific circles, serving the Academy of Natural Sciences and government surveyors with meticulous assays of minerals.

He published widely on ores and mineral waters, mentored younger scientists, and helped raise the standards for American chemical research; his careful scholarship and kind demeanor were long remembered by colleagues, and his remains lie at Mount Vernon Cemetery.
