Biography
Fukuoka Takachika was a samurai of the late Edo and Meiji periods who witnessed and lived through Japan's dramatic transition from feudal society to modern nation-state. His life spanned the transformation of the samurai class and Japan's embrace of Western modernization.
Fukuoka's legacy reflects the experiences of samurai who adapted to Japan's changing society during the nineteenth century. He is remembered at Somei Cemetery as a figure who embodied the transitional era in which he lived.
