Gene Ramey
1913–1984 (age 71)
jazz musician
Biography
Gene Ramey emerged from Kansas City as a hard-swinging double bassist whose steady pulse anchored the combos of Count Basie, Lester Young, and other giants of the swing era. His rhythmic clarity kept pace with the evolving bebop scene even as he traveled the country with big bands and small groups.
In later years he returned to his home state and remained a touchstone for younger musicians, sharing stories of late-night sessions and insisting that the music always belonged to the people who played it. Oakwood Cemetery now preserves the memory of a musician who carried the heart of jazz through decades of change.
