Biography
George Birkbeck, a physician by training, turned his energies to adult education, founding the Mechanics’ Institute in London and championing technical instruction for working men.
He believed that knowledge should be accessible to all and labored to broaden opportunities, a conviction commemorated at his grave in Kensal Green Cemetery and in the institutions that bear his name.
