Biography

George C. Thorpe was a Marine officer whose career blended command, instruction, and thoughtful reflection, lending his experience to the small wars and campaigns of the early twentieth century. He was also a respected author, and his writings on Marine Corps history and tactics helped articulate the service’s unique character.

He demonstrated steady leadership ashore and afloat, mentoring younger officers and reminding them that a warrior must also be a student of war; his influence endures through the men he guided and the pages he authored, and he lies in Arlington National Cemetery.
