Biography

George Dayton began his career in retail with a modest dry goods store in St. Paul that, under his guidance, grew into the venerable Dayton's department store, known for its courteous service and commitment to quality. His careful stewardship of the business laid the groundwork for a retail legacy that would later evolve into the Target Corporation, while remaining rooted in the Upper Midwest communities he served.

Dayton also translated his success into civic generosity, supporting churches, hospitals, and educational causes that reflected his belief in responsible citizenship, and he was remembered fondly by neighbors when he was laid to rest at Lakewood Cemetery.
