Biography

Born in 1809 to a family rooted along the Connecticut coast, George Edward Hand spent his youth learning the rhythms of land and sea near the Hammonasset River, always attentive to neighbors whose fortunes he quietly steadied.

He carried that sense of duty into every season of his life, and when he passed in 1889 the community remembered him for his calm counsel and welcoming hearth; his name now rests in Hammonasset Cemetery among the trees he cherished.
