George Hetzel

Biography

George Hetzel brought a painter's sensitivity to the rugged scenery of Western Pennsylvania, founding the Scalp Level school of landscape painting and teaching students to honor the interplay of light, fog, and stone.

He chronicled the region's moods with loving detail, inspiring generations of artists, and after his death in 1899 he was buried at Homewood Cemetery, where admirers still recall his reverent eye.
