Biography

George J. Adler, a German-born scholar, came to these shores and devoted himself to teaching languages, producing grammars and translations that opened German and classical texts to American readers.

He taught with patience and warmth in New York institutions, inspiring countless students with his deep knowledge of philology and his belief that learning the languages of Europe could promote broader understanding; he now rests at Trinity Church Cemetery and Mausoleum.
