George K. Shiel was an early Salem resident whose involvement in civic and business affairs helped to nurture the town’s growth during Oregon’s territorial years, providing steady leadership in a time of rapid change.
He was known for his integrity, for fostering goodwill among neighbors, and for an abiding concern for the civic institutions that would sustain Salem’s future, and his memory rests among those honored at Salem Pioneer Cemetery.
