Biography

George Miller Sternberg, a leading Army physician, helped establish American bacteriology by identifying pathogens, insisting on rigorous laboratory research, and steering the Army Medical Department into modern science.

As Surgeon General from 1893 to 1902 he championed public health measures, disseminated vital knowledge about infectious diseases, and left a legacy of scientific leadership sealed with a burial at Arlington National Cemetery.
