Biography
George Ritter Burnett joined the Army in the post–Civil War years and distinguished himself while serving with the cavalry on the Great Plains, earning the nation’s highest military decoration for conspicuous bravery in action against Native American forces.
He continued to serve the United States in the Spanish-American War period and in the Philippines, dedicating his career to the cavalry arm before being buried with honors at Arlington National Cemetery.
