Biography

George W. Getty graduated from West Point in 1839 and served in the Mexican War before rising to prominence as a division commander during the Civil War, leading troops through the Siege of Vicksburg and in operations across Louisiana and Mississippi.

In the postwar Army he oversaw fortifications, served on inspection boards, and lent his experience to training the next generation of officers, closing a distinguished career with internment at Arlington National Cemetery.
