Georgy Adamovich
1892–1972 (age 80)
Biography
Georgy Adamovich was born in 1892 and soon became one of the most thoughtful voices of the Russian émigré literary scene, moving to Paris after the upheavals at home. A poet, critic, and translator, he devoted himself to preserving the spiritual depth of Russian poetry while engaging with European modernism, offering measured translations and critical essays that guided readers through tumultuous times.
He spent decades at the heart of the advocating of literature as a moral force, hosting salons, championing young writers, and upholding the sense of cultural continuity even as exile reshaped identity. His final years found him still reflecting on language and exile, leaving behind a body of writing that remains a reference for those bridging two worlds.
