Gideon Shryock

Biography

Gideon Shryock rose to prominence as one of Kentucky's most accomplished early architects, embracing the principles of the Greek Revival style to lend permanence and dignity to the young commonwealth. His thoughtful designs, most notably the Old Kentucky State Capitol, helped define the character of public architecture in the region and inspired generations of builders and citizens alike.

Throughout his long career, he championed the belief that public buildings should embody civic pride, and he left a lasting legacy in the landmarks that still grace the city. His life of service concluded with his interment at Cave Hill Cemetery, where visitors still honor the man whose vision shaped so much of the urban landscape.
