Biography
Rear Admiral Gustavus Fox, a daring naval officer, served his country during the Civil War and later helped guide the United States Navy through a period of modernization. His efforts to improve ordnance and the navy’s administrative organization strengthened the service at a critical moment in its development.
Fox also served as Assistant Secretary of the Navy, where he balanced logistics with a care for sailors’ welfare, earning the respect of contemporaries. His burial in Rock Creek Cemetery honors a lifetime of duty to the republic.
