Harriet Hosmer
1830–1908 (age 78)
Sculptor
Biography
Harriet Hosmer was among the first American women to pursue the art of sculpture as a profession, studying in Rome and Florence when few women could claim the studios of Europe. Her keen intellect and graceful workmanship brought to life figures that celebrated classical ideals while quietly asserting the strength of women who sought intellectual and creative freedom.
Her works and the warm friendships she forged in expatriate artistic circles helped open the door for generations of women artists, and now the serene slopes of Mount Auburn Cemetery cradle the gentle yet determined spirit that once set marble in motion.
