Businessman/Philanthropist
Biography
Born into the Whitney fortune, Harry Payne Whitney carried the family name into banking, shipping, railroads, and the world of thoroughbred racing, where he managed one of the nation's most storied stables while bringing a shrewd business mind to every venture he undertook.
He directed his wealth toward the arts and medicine, underwriting museum collections, hospital wings, and cultural institutions that still owe much to his support, and requested that his remains rest at Woodlawn Cemetery among the many luminaries he admired.
