Biography
Heber Manning Wells, born in 1859, answered the call of the new state of Utah by serving as its first governor; in those formative years he guided the creation of state institutions, championed wise stewardship of the West's precious water resources, and promoted public education.
After leaving office he remained involved in civic affairs, counseling emerging leaders with the same practical idealism that marked his governorship and being long remembered for integrity and an unshaken belief in Utah's promise.
