Henry Fowle Durant

Biography

Henry Fowle Durant, born in 1822, combined legal training with deep philanthropic conviction, providing the vision and resources that brought Wellesley College into being as a place where women could pursue rigorous scholarship.

He died in 1881, and the college that bears his name continues to reflect the ideals of thoughtful inquiry and service that he championed.
