Biography

Henry Goddard Thomas answered the call to serve his country during its darkest hour, rising through the ranks of the Union Army with quiet courage. The Maine-born officer led troops in a variety of campaigns, earning the respect of both his men and his superiors for steadiness under fire and fairness in command.

In later years he remained active in veterans' causes and the civic institutions of his home state, ever mindful of the sacrifices made to secure the Union. His passing in 1897 brought an end to a life marked by honorable duty, and Evergreen Cemetery now holds the grave of a soldier who sought to heal a nation by noble example.
