Biography

Educator Henry Plummer Cheatham, Jr., following the example of his father, dedicated his career to strengthening schools for African American children throughout the South. A teacher, principal, and mentor, he worked to improve teacher training, secure school supplies, and foster pride among students facing the challenges of segregation.

He traveled widely to advocate for public education, lending his voice to professional associations and encouraging young people to pursue learning as a path to leadership; Philadelphia National Cemetery now holds his remains, a place of quiet reflection on his lifelong contributions.
