John Jacob Oswandel was a soldier who served during the Civil War era and later turned to writing, chronicling the experiences of those who fought and the nation they fought to preserve. His publications offered reflections on discipline, honor, and the bonds forged in camp and field.

After his passing in 1889 he was laid to rest in Philadelphia National Cemetery, his grave a reminder of the veterans whose thoughts shaped the postwar republic.
