Biography
Henry Smith Lane rose through the ranks of Indiana politics to serve briefly as governor in 1861 before taking his seat in the United States Senate, where he represented Hoosier interests through the early Civil War years and worked to preserve the Union.
Even after leaving national office, he remained engaged in civic discussions at home, and Oak Hill Cemetery stands as a reminder of the leadership he offered his state.
