Herman Charles Merivale

1839–1906 (age 67)

Biography

Herman Charles Merivale, remembered both as a civil servant and a man of letters, balanced his role at the Board of Trade with a restless imagination for the stage. His witty comedies and thoughtful verse, published through the journals of the day, intertwined the sharpness of an administrator with the lyricism of a poet.

In later years his pen continued to illuminate the tensions of Victorian society, while friends valued his kindness and support for other writers; he rests in Brompton Cemetery, a fitting place for one who celebrated the power of both public duty and private creativity.
