Biography
Howard Engstrom combined a sharp intellect with naval service, applying mathematical insight to problems of navigation, logistics, and training as technology reshaped the fleet. He believed that careful analysis could strengthen every sailor’s chance of success.
He championed collaboration between scientists and sailors, believing that rigorous study and humane leadership were complementary duties that together preserved the Navy’s strength.
