statesman
Biography
Hugh Lawson White rose from the Tennessee frontier to serve in the United States Senate, where from 1825 to 1840 he spoke with a dignified voice, championing the rule of law while carrying the concerns of western citizens into the halls of Congress.
Even after his presidential bid in 1836, he remained a mentor to younger leaders, and the memory of his measured statesmanship rests among those who visited First Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
