Biography

J. Alden Weir, born in 1852, became a painter whose respectful studies of light and landscape helped to bring American Impressionism into conversation with European style. His sensitivity to rural New England scenes and Washington, D.C. interiors earned him admiration, and the grounds of Windham Center Cemetery now keep his memory among the trees.

He taught younger artists, helped found the Society of American Artists, and left canvases that continue to whisper about calm afternoons and dignified people; his work remains part of public and private collections that honor quiet craft.
