James A. McKenzie returned to civilian life with a resolute desire to strengthen his community, overseeing agricultural interests and supporting local commerce while mentoring young men intent on rebuilding after the war.

He served in various civic capacities, remained devoted to his church, and was known for quietly supporting schools and charitable causes until his death in 1904.
