James Anson Otho Brooke

1884–1914 (age 30)

Biography

James Anson Otho Brooke, born 1884, served as an officer in the early days of the Great War and was known to his men for steady judgment and readiness to share their hardships. He led them north of Ypres, where the fighting at Zantvoorde was ferocious, calming nerves and pushing forward when the moment demanded it.

He died in 1914, leaving family and friends to look back on a short but honorable life, and now rests within Zantvoorde British Cemetery, where flowers and quiet steps honour the young leader who fell before the year was out.
