James Booker, born in 1939, was a virtuoso pianist whose dazzling technique and soulful touch bridged gospel, jazz, and blues, bringing joy to listeners across the country. He poured his heart into every performance, turning late-night clubs and festival stages into places of celebration and communion.

Behind the bravura was a generous spirit that welcomed aspiring musicians to sit beside him and share stories; when he died in 1983, fellow artists and fans alike honored his memory, and he now rests at Providence Memorial Park and Mausoleum.
