Biography
James Coutts Michie, born in 1859, was a Scottish painter celebrated for his luminous portraits and landscape compositions, and his work found favor in both Edinburgh and London through exhibitions at the Royal Academy and the Royal Scottish Academy.
He became known as an advocate for artistic exchange between Britain and continental Europe and trusted mentor to younger painters, dedicating himself to those pursuits until his death in 1919; he now rests at Brookwood Cemetery.
