James H. Eckels

Biography

James H. Eckels rose to prominence as Comptroller of the Currency during the 1890s, guiding the examination of national banks through the panic of 1893 and helping to steady the financial system.

After returning to Chicago he remained active in banking circles, and his legacy rests in Graceland Cemetery.
