Biography

James M. Safford spent his life interpreting the earth for the benefit of his fellow citizens, teaching geology and producing careful surveys that helped shape the development of the region. His work as a scientist and educator made him a trusted guide for young students and for the agricultural and industrial interests that relied on his geological expertise.

He remained a dedicated scholar until his passing in 1907, leaving behind a body of work and a legacy of thoughtful observation that continue to be honored in his final resting place at Oakland Cemetery.
