Biography

James Milton Shackelford, a Kentucky lawyer, joined the Union cause and rose to the rank of brigadier general, commanding troops with calm steadiness and earning praise for his fairness.

After the war he returned to Louisville as a jurist, serving on the U.S. District Court and guiding Reconstruction-era Kentucky through contentious disputes with the same evenhanded temperament.
