Biography

Jean Joseph Amable Humbert became known as a daring military officer, leading French forces with conviction and even coming to the aid of Irish nationalists in 1798, yet he always sought to balance bold action with a sense of justice. Later years found him in Louisiana, where the discipline he had learned in the army translated into thoughtful oversight of local defenses and support for fellow citizens.

He spent his final years in the region, taking part in civic life with the same care he gave his troops, and now rests in Saint Louis Cemetery No. 1 among the community he adopted.
