Biography
James Terwilliger (1809-1892) was among the earliest settlers to shape the Oregon Territory, carving out farmland and helping design the roads that would connect the growing settlements. His perseverance helped establish the foundations for what would become a vibrant Portland neighborhood.
Terwilliger took pride in mentoring younger pioneers, showing them how to tend the soil while respecting the land around them. His gravesite at River View Cemetery marks the legacy of a pioneer spirit that still resonates in the Terwilliger Boulevard area.
