Biography

Joaquín Suárez (1781–1868) was a stalwart of Uruguay’s earliest political life, rallying compatriots around the nascent republic’s ideals and serving in key leadership roles as the country navigated independence.

He steadfastly defended constitutional order through decades of conflict, earning a place of honor in Uruguayan memory and the Metropolitan Basilica Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and San Felipe and Santiago in Montevideo where he rests.
